  • Interesting comparison. I see aluminum used a lot in aerial service entrances. Since it is not in conduit, its larger diameter is not an issue. Also, since it is exposed to the air, overheating is less likely as well.

    The only time I have seen aluminum wires is for service feeds where larger cable is more price friendly in aluminum.  There is however, a lot more preparation required like using Penetrox on the stripped wire end before terminating to help against oxidation. Also coming back to re-torque connections is required because aluminum wires expand and contract with temperature change and can get flattened out over time creating loose connections making hot spots.

    When working with smaller gauge copper wire do you prefer using stranded or solid wires?

    Stranded, due to its flexibility. It's much easier to pull through conduit, especially when there are turns.
