What are the differences between the 6 HMI families that Rockwell currently markets and what are the target applications of each?

What are the differences between the 6 HMI families that Rockwell currently markets and what are the target applications of each?

  • I will try to cover where each of the families fit in.

    PanelView 5500
For green field projects where a new implementation and approach to the control system makes sense. We don’t see many instances where this platform makes sense in our area at this time. Only supports Ethernet networks. This uses Studio 5000 View Designer programming software. Further discussions would be needed to see if this family is a good fit for your projects.

    PanelView Plus 7
There are two families within this new platform. This will be the most common platform in our area for new installations. Only supports Ethernet networks.
PanelView Plus 7 Standard – smaller applications with connection to only one controller. An expanded offering that is used in place of the PanelView Plus 6 Compact family.
PanelView Plus 7 Performance – larger applications and allows for connection to multiple controllers. An expanded offering that is used in place of the PanelView Plus 6 family. This uses FactoryTalk View ME Studio programming software. Compatible with all of Rockwell’s controller platforms. These will less costly than the comparative PanelView Plus 6 model.

    PanelView Plus 6
Larger applications with connections to multiple controllers. This platform supports Ethernet as well as legacy networks such as ControlNet and DH+. If a customer has an older obsolete PanelView, in most cases this product has an offering that will fit into the same cutout. This uses FactoryTalk View ME Studio programming software. Compatible with all of Rockwell’s controller platforms.

    PanelView Plus 6 Compact
Smaller applications with connection to a single controller. If a customer has an older obsolete PanelView, in most cases this product has an offering that will fit into the same cutout. This uses FactoryTalk View ME Studio programming software. Compatible with all of Rockwell’s controller platforms.

    PanelView 800
Very small applications with connection to a single controller. Programmed with Connected Components Workbench software (CCW). Ideally suited for use with the Micro800 family of products, however can be used with MicroLogix & CompactLogix as well.

    PanelView Component
Legacy HMI platform for very small applications. Connections with a single controller and works with the MicroLogix, Micro 800 and SLC500 families. Mostly discontinued and I don’t believe the remaining models will be around much longer. We recommend going with the PanelView 800 instead. Programmed with Connected Components Workbench software (CCW).

Hi....i am a new user here. In my case I updated my Automation Organizer a couple days ago and today I went to download the system software to the PLC. I selected All Modules and the CPU successfully updated. Then it went on to the PH1. After a little bit I got an error saying that the update had failed, reboot the PLC and try again.

    Hi Evan,

This type of question would be handled better by contacting your local distributor PLC specialist to go over the details of the system you have and the software you are using. Further support may also be required by Rockwell TechSupport so it is not easy to deal with in The GRID. If you need assistance locating a specialist in your area, please provide me with your details and I will try to find one.
